Department of Public Safety spokesman PO2 Eric David identified the victim as Atanacio Tabuso Asuncion of San Antonio.
David said Asuncion sustained abrasions to the chest and abdomen, a fractured left shoulder, a crushed chest, and laceration to the forehead.
Asuncion was also a delivery man of the Saipan Tribune, it was learned.
The victim’s vehicle was a 1990 black Toyota Hilux pick-up truck.
“The victim came from his first job at a poker establishment,” David told the Variety.
“Preliminary reports indicated that the operator was traveling east direction. Operator lost controlled of his vehicle veering on to the opposite lane and hitting the gutter,” David said.
He said alcohol was ruled out as a factor in the accident, but police were still determining the vehicle’s speed before it crashed.
Asuncion failed to remain on the right side of the road, David said.
The incident was reported to DPS at about 6:05 a.m.
The accident near the Triple A recycling center and the Ogumoro compound, David said.
Responding traffic officers saw the vehicle in the gutter, with moderate damage to the pick-up’s front left and left side, David said.
“At that time, officers at the scene found a male individual (the operator) ejected from the driver’s window with his seat belt still wrapped around the left shoulder,” David said.
Officers checked for a sign of life and found none.
Medic personnel secured Asuncion and transferred him to Commonwealth Health Center.
The case was still under investigation, David said.
