Letter to the Editor: To Continental Micronesia President Charles Duncan

I want to first thank you for your efforts in promoting the tourism industry in the region, and on the island of Rota in particular. Continental Airlines and Cape Air have proven to be good corporate partners in our community, and the entry of Cape Air’s service to the island of Rota has brought significant economic benefits to our people.

So it was with great concern that I learned of Continental’s decision to suspend air service into the island of Rota.

Since the start of Cape Air services in 2005, this increased air service into our community has served to help grow the tourism industry on the island. For that reason, I am respectfully requesting that you reconsider the suspension of service to Rota. I understand that economic forces may have precipitated this decision, but I feel that with some form of public-private collaboration we may be able to continue this service into the island. Cape Air’s presence on Rota has had an immeasurable positive impact on our community, and which without may lead to further economic decline on the island.

Therefore, I would like to propose a public-private partnership that may keep Cape Air coming into Rota. With the support of the CNMI leadership, particular the Rota leadership and the Marianas Visitors Authority, I am confident that we may find a solution that could be mutually beneficial to both the airline and the people of the CNMI. It is my personal belief that with proper marketing and promotion packages we may increase the demand for Rota seats, including from those emerging markets such as military personnel and students from nearby Guam.

On behalf of the people of Rota I thank you in advance for your favorable consideration of this request. Please do not hesitate to contact my office so that we may further discuss this matter at your convenience. I will look forward to your reply.
