Man in ‘ice’ case to change plea

The 35-year-old Mafnas, also known as Kojack, has agreed to plead guilty.

He was charged with trafficking and illegal possession of “ice” in connection with a police anti-drug operation against him on March 3, 2010.

Mafnas is being represented by Assistant Public Defender Douglas W. Hartig while Assistant Attorney General Benjamin Petersburg is the prosecutor.

Mafnas has been in Department of Corrections custody after his arrest on March 5, 2010.

If convicted of the charges, Mafnas faces a maximum jail term of five years and a maximum fine of $2,000 for possession of controlled substance, the plea agreement stated.

Mafnas faces a minimum sentence of 25 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $10,000 for trafficking, it added.

In return for pleading guilty, the plea agreement stated that the CNMI government will not move to revoke Mafnas’ probation in his previous conviction in a theft by deception and burglary case.

The plea agreement stated that the CNMI government agrees to dismiss the other charges against him “and to recommend and vigorously support” the terms to be imposed.

Mafnas will be sentenced to five years imprisonment, all suspended but for 22 months, with credit for time he already served at the Corrections facility since March 5, 2010.
