Palau Conservation Society Board of directors held retreat

Elbuchel Sadang, executive director of PCS said the purpose of retreat is to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the board, shared vision for the optimal working relationship between the Board and Executive Director, and steps to follow to ensure the realization of that vision.

The Board of Directors retreat also tackled the approval of 2010-2015 Strategic plan, board understanding of and feedback to PCS’s new Business Plan, improved confidence and skills in fundraising to enable board members to support new Business Plan and six- year Strategic Plan. Tools to ensure effective board development processes in the future, more committed and engaged board, and their enhanced ability to offer their many skills and other resources to PCS in a variety of ways and individualized work plan for each Board Members for the coming year.

Ms. Ellen Grant, an organizational development consultant was hired to work with the board during the three days retreat.

The board members organized themselves to optimize their participation in the strategic plan. This included creating new Board Committees and naming Chairpersons for each committee. They also determined the kinds of skills and knowledge they need on the board and began to identify prospective board members with these attributes. In the next couple of months they board will continue to work to nominate new board members best suited to help implement the new Strategic Plan and maximize PCS’s impact.

The PCS is Palau’s first nature conservation non-government organization (NGO). For sixteen years PCS has been working with Palau’s communities to conserve and manage their natural resources.

“The mission of the PCS is to protect the environment for future generation. To work with the community and protect the environment for our children.” Sadang said in an interview

Aside from the communities and States, the PCS is also working with the government agencies..

The board members would like to acknowledge the support of the David & Lucile Packard Foundation for this retreat. The new strategic plan is available to the membership of PCS who may be interested.

The last retreat of the board was held in 2003.
