Miguel Rangamar Fitial was the third fatality in vehicular-related incidents this year, according to Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr.
DPS said it received a call at 2:45 a.m. about the car crash that occurred at the southbound shoulder of Beach Road in Susupe by the northern entrance of the Susupe Beach Park.
“Speed has been determined as one of the factors to this crash. The driver was also found not to be wearing any safety belts. Alcohol has not been ruled out as of this time as the case is still under investigation,” said Blas in a statement.
According to Sgt. Anthony I. Macaranas, who conducted the preliminary at-scene investigation, the 2002 Toyota Highlander 5-door wagon was traveling north along Beach Road.
Blas said the vehicle lost control as it went around the curve by the Mobil service station and collided with the concrete sign of the Susupe Beach Park on the shoulder of the southbound lane.
Responding traffic investigators and medics rushed the driver, later identified as Fitial, to the Commonwealth Health Center.
Dr. Shirish Balachandra pronounced Fitial, a Gualo Rai resident, dead at about 3:25 a.m., Blas said.
He suffered head and chest injuries.
The vehicle’s front left, left rear and right center had extensive damage, police said.
