Firefighters Derrick David, Dudley Derbai and Fritzgerald Demei of the Division of Fire and Rescue together with Police Officer Murray Blesam of the Division of Patrol and Police Officer Billy Rekemel of the Division of Fish and Wildlife Protection will be joining 35 other firefighters to attend the training.
The training which commence with Work Capacity Test on June 18 and 19 consists of three levels: Walk test-light , 1 mile walk in 16 minutes; Field test-moderate, 2 mile carrying 25# pack in 30 minutes; and Pact test- arduous, 3 mile carrying 45# in 45 minutes.
Meanwhile the Firefighter Course will begin on June 21. The course will focus on : ICS 100 (Incident Command System), IS 700a (National Incident Management System), Topographic Influences, Fire Weather, Wildland Fire Behavior and Safety, Basic Terminology, Firefighter Preparedness , Resource Types, 10 Standard Firefighting Orders, Fire Shelters, Transportation, Hand Tools, Firing Devices, Water Use, Suppression, Patrol/Mop Up, Hazardous Materials, Wildland Urban Interface Safety, Working with Inmates and Human Factors
The training will also include leadership concepts as well as hands on training.
The training was set through a grant awarded to the Division of Fire and Rescue by a federal assistance under the Cooperative Fire Program- Region 5.
Through the cooperative efforts between Mr. Joseph Mafnas of Guam Forest Service and BPS Director Norvert H. Yano such training was made available for the five officers.
For the last several weeks, Division of Fire and Rescue Chief Benhart Baulechong has been preparing the officers for the Work Capacity Test as those traveling on the West Coast of the Compact Road in the early morning hours may have seen these officers toning up for the training in Guam.
The BPS is confident that the five officers will be able to complete the training.
The five officers will be returning home on June 26.
