CUC seeks water, wastewater rate hike

CUC is charging $25 per load of “honey wagon” dumping but it will collect $75 per load when CPUC approves its request.

The current level of credit card charge limitation is “unlimited” but CUC is now proposing a $300 residential limit and $1,000 commercial limit.

For water, CUC is currently charging $1.81 per 1,000 gallons of residential use and under 3,000 gallons for commercial use.

By June 21, water customers will be charged $1.86.

Those consuming 3,001 to15,000 gallons will  pay $0.13 more per gallon; 15,001 to 30,000, $0.16; 30,001 to 60,000, $0.19; and 60,001 and above, $0.22.

CUC is currently charging its residential and commercial customers a flat rate of $0.91 for 3,000 gallons.

By June, this rate will be increased by $0.03.

Those consuming 3,001 to 15,000 gallons will pay $0.07 more; 15,001 to 30,000, $0.08; 30,001 to 60,000, $0.10; and 60,001 and above, $0.13.

The government rate per 1,000 gallons is currently $54.30 but by June it will increase to $55.93.

For wastewater, the monthly service fee is currently  $8.20 but this will be raised to $15.99 in June and $21.59 in October.

The residential and commercial metered rate per 1,000 gallons is $1.37 which will increase to $2.67 in June and $3.61 in October.

The government wastewater rate for every  1,000 gallons is $30. By June, this will rise to $59 and $80 in October.

CUC said it is operating at a substantial deficit and cannot borrow money.

It only relies on the revenues from its customers and federal grants, CUC added.

“The proposed rate increases are critical in order for the company to maintain financial health,” it said.

According to CUC,  it is required by statute and the federal stipulated orders to achieve “full cost recovery.”

In Nov. 2008, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency signed and lodged two stipulated orders to reform and bring into compliance CUC’s wastewater plants and collection systems, public drinking water systems, five power plants and an oil transfer pipeline.
