Sablan to host town hall meetings

At the town hall meetings, Sablan will be taking questions about issues important to NMI residents, and asking for input on legislation currently before the U.S. Congress.

“The conversations that came about from last year’s series of town hall meetings in the NMI were very productive,” said Sablan “The feedback, questions, and comments, provided a deeper insight into the needs and concerns of the people. Having that information is what inspires me to do more in Washington, D.C.,” he explains.

The first town hall meeting will be held at Northern Marianas College on Tuesday, April 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in Room D1. The second one will be on Wednesday, April 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the multi-purpose center in Susupe.

“Having open communication with constituents is an essential part of what I do, I hear on a daily basis from people in the NMI by phone and e-mail about their concerns and opinions regarding national policy and the events they hear or read about in the media,” Sablan said. “But these town halls will give me a chance to see people face to face, and, I hope, to hear from all of the people I represent in Congress.”

Some of the issues expected to be discussed are the recently enacted health care reform law, expanding educational opportunities for the people of the CNMI, federal immigration, energy alternatives for the islands, environmental protection, and the services Sablan’s office can provide directly to constituents.

“I invite everyone to attend and participate in what I hope will be a very open and candid dialogue,” said Sablan.

The town hall meeting today will also be aired live via videoconferencing at the NMC Rota and Tinian campuses.

Rota and Tinian residents are invited to attend the video conference at their respective NMC campuses from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and participate in the town hall.
