Nutrition program gets $5,000 bonus from feds

The WIC was one of the top five large agencies and the top five small agencies chosen for this first-time bonus award.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the performance awards to all the states that have done an exceptional job promoting and supporting breastfeeding efforts among mothers participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children on March 31.

The awards totaling to $5 million will recognize those state agencies that have improved and achieved high rates of breastfeeding among WIC participants and families in need.

According to the USDA, the top 10 state agencies with the highest rates of breastfed infants and greatest improvement rates in breastfeeding will divide the bonus awards.

The minimum award for the small state agencies is $5,000 and $50,000 for large state agencies.
