Saipan student gains appointment to Merchant Marine Academy

Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY for the Class of 2014.  Jung, a 2009 graduate of Mount Carmel School on Saipan, is currently attending the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. He is the son of In Young Jung and Ae Seon Jung of Saipan.

Jung was nominated  by Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan.  “I congratulate Min Joo on his appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy.  He is an ambitious, well-rounded individual who I believe will make excellent addition to the Merchant Marine Academy and will represent the Northern Mariana Islands well at Kings Point,” said Sablan.

Jung is among the 10 New Mexico Military Institute preparatory school students out of 30 that received an early appointment for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2014.

He is a member of the institute’s Centurion Drill Team.

Prior to moving to New Mexico, Jung was actively involved in community service activities.

He is a former AmeriCorps volunteer tutor, head camp counselor and member of his church choir.

While in high school, Jung was also active in many extracurricular activities.

He played for Mount Carmel School’s basketball team and was named Most Valuable Player one season.

He was a member of the paddling team that won the island-wide championship for two years.  He was also a member of the school volleyball team, Mock Trial Competition Championship team and participated in the Junior Statesmen of America program for three summers.
