Lawmakers to return to Saipan next week from DC trip

Senate President Paul A. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, Senate Vice President Jude U. Hofschneider, R-Tinian, and House Committee on Federal and Foreign Relations Chairman Fredrick P. Deleon Guerrero, Ind.-Saipan, left on Saturday to attend the U.S. House Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife oversight hearing on the implementation of the federalization law, or U.S. P.L. 110-229, in the Northern Marianas and Guam.

House Minority Leader Rep. Diego T. Benavente, R-Saipan, left ahead of the three to join Gov. Benigno R. Fitial in his trip to D.C. Benavente is expected to return on the 27th of this month.

Before heading to Washington, Fitial stayed in Japan for about a week, hoping to meet with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama about the possibility of relocating the Futenma Airbase to Tinian but he failed to get an audience with the Japanese official.

The CNMI officials urged the U.S. Congress to reject the U.S. Department of the Interior’s improved immigration status recommendation for guest workers.
