Tony Babauta, Interior’s assistant secretary for insular areas, signed the documents on Friday during his brief visit on Saipan.
He said there is a need to diversity CNMI tourism in five areas — brand identity, opportunity for training and developing a niche market.
Interior requires a report on how the grant will be spent.
“Certain benchmark must be put in place in order to drawdown the money,” said Babauta.
May is tourism month in the CNMI.
