NMC selects Guam college, 5 other institutions for benchmark comparison

Since the beginning of the fall term, NMC President Sharon Y. Hart said she has been working with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, or OIE, and the National Center for Higher Education Management System to identify such peer institutions.

After a review based on program mix, student enrollment and other considerations, NMC  selected Chipola College in Marianas, Florida; Great Basin College in Elko, Navada; Northern New Mexico College in Espanalo, New Mexico; Edison State Community College in Piqua, Ohio; Kent State University Salem Campus in Salem, Ohio; and Guam Community College in Mangilao, Guam.

Hart said she had contacted the chief executive officers of each peer institution to inform them of their selection.

“OIE has prepared a staffing pattern comparison analysis of NMC and its peer institutions and has shared and fine-tuned preliminary finding with the college’s management team,” she said.

She said OIE headed by Galvin Deleon Guerrero is expected to present its findings to the NMC board of regents in its next meeting.

On Friday, Hart also told the board about the college’s accreditation progress.

She said she will deliver a statement concerning the progress  since the Nov. 7-9 follow up visit by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

The update will be delivered to the commission when it meets on Jan. 10 to 12.

Hart said the college has reviewed the ACCJC’s November follow-up visiting team report and corrected some errors of fact.

Hart said the college’s accreditation reaffirmation and accreditation standard teams continue to meet weekly in preparation for the 2012 comprehensive self-evaluation that will be submitted to the commission.

The college community participated in an accreditation workshop at the multi-purpose center on Nov. 29.

“Everyone at the college will work with the accreditation standard teams to prepare the 2012 self-evaluation report,” she said.

During the board meeting on Friday, NMC Office of Admissions & Records Director Cynthia Deleon Guerrero said they wanted to discuss data and other information  mentioned in the report during the public comment portion.

But Board Chairman Juan T. Lizama said they would not address management and personnel matters.

“We don’t want to micro-mange,” he said, adding that the board will not deal with  “methodology” involving management.

Hart said she and the Office of Institution Effectiveness will look into those issues.

“Every office will be given an opportunity to sit down with OIE,” she added.
