2nd defendant in assault case arrested

Superior Court Judge Kenneth L. Govendo retained the $10,000 bail order on Palacios, who was remanded to the Department of Corrections after his initial appearance and bail hearing yesterday morning.

Palacios and co-defendant Kevin I. Esteves, 21, the first to be arrested, have been charged with assault, assault and battery, criminal mischief, disturbing the peace, and minor consuming alcohol.

Last Friday, the court allowed Esteves to post $500 as 10 percent of the bail order that lowered the original $10,000 bail order to $5,000.

Responding officers said Palacios, then holding a can of beer, told them that a local male assaulted Esteves and ran away.

Follow-up investigation showed that Esteves and Palacios beat up their victim for declining to shake hands with Esteves whom the victim didn’t know, police said.

Esteves and Palacios were both under the influence of alcohol at the time, the victim told police.

Esteves and Palacios started punching and kicking the victim’s face, police added.

When the victim finally escaped, the defendants started throwing rocks at his vehicle.
