Guam public hearing on mobile phone ban today

Committee on Public Safety and Law Enforcement Chairman Adolpho Palacios will be conducting the public hearing at 10 a.m.

Ada introduced the bill earlier this month in light of the increasing amount of vehicles on Guam’s roadways.

Current Guam law only prohibits sending text messages while driving. The legislation will ban any type of mobile phone usage while driving but allows for the use of hands-free devices.

If enacted, violators of the new law will face fines of no less than $100 for a first offense, no less than $500 for repeat offenses, and, if the violation is a contributing factor to a traffic accident, a fine of no less than $1,000, along with the possible suspension of driving privileges.
