Final three days for Island Artist Christmas exhibit

Arts coordinator Parker Yobei said they will be open until Thursday, Dec. 22 as the 23rd falls on an austerity Friday.

“If you still haven’t shopped for gifts for Christmas, we still have more items from our local artists that are ideal as gifts. Come on up and check the displays out,” Yobei said.

Although traffic at the exhibit is not as heavy compared to other similar events, sales are good, he added.

Yobei said since they opened on Nov. 28, they have already sold a lot of postcards, handmade Christmas cards, paintings and little items.

“Not many people drop by but sales have been higher, more than what we expected,” Yobei said.

Fourteen artists initially joined the exhibit.

Locally made products available at the exhibit include photographs, acrylic/oil paintings, wood carvings, postcards, handmade jewelry, knitted products, woodwork, ornaments and other crafts.

“We would like to thank the continued support of the community who came and bought local art,” Yobei said.

In the remaining three days, they hope to see an increase in visitors and sales as people scramble for last-minute gift shopping.

“We are also happy for the brisk sales because it means additional income for our artists,” Yobei said.

The Island Artist and Christmas Crafts Exhibit is one of the three major art exhibits the Department of Culture and Community Affairs holds each year. Local artists exhibit their products for free and all sales go back to them.

Yobei said DCCA does not get any share of the proceeds because as it merely serves as a bridge between local artists and buyers/art collectors.

Exhibit hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit the Arts Council office next to the post office on Capital Hill or call 322-9982/83.
