Recyclables: from junk to glory

Discarded mineral water bottles, soda cans, corks, Styrofoam, paper, old or broken CD’s, plastic and paper plates and cups, cardboards, toy parts, and bottle caps — these and others were rescued and have emerged as beautiful shining angels, lanterns, miniature Christmas trees, bells, candles, ribbons and other glorious glittering decorations.

Through the ingenuity of creative individuals, these recyclables are now enjoying their moments of fame and glory as they adorn the Christmas trees at the Paseo de Marianas in Garapan.

Weeks of collecting these recyclables and weeks more of work on the part of teachers, parents and students have resulted in one spectacular show that highlights what creative hands and minds can do.

Who would have thought angels can come out of plastic plates or cups? Or that bottle caps can be fashioned into graceful twirls that you can hang from the Christmas tree added with a few specks of glitter?

For the past six years, the Christmas tree decorating contest using recycled materials has been diligently pursued by PDM Promoters Inc. to spread awareness about the importance of recycling. The competition is now PDM Promoter’s signature event.

As an incentive, PDM Promoters had been giving out thousands of dollars in prizes each year with the assistance of  generous companies that also support this campaign.

If you haven’t been to the Paseo de Marianas, go there and see what the kids and teachers have come up with. You could get your own ideas, fashion your own designs and start your own recyclables.

Start looking around in your home and see what you can create out of discarded objects. You will be surprised. Your contribution to the recycling campaign may be small but it can do a lot to help the world  celebrate an environmentally friendly Christmas.

Recycling is not only practical and cost-saving, it is also entertaining, educational, earth-friendly and yes — green.
