Wang scored two goals to lift MP United Football Club (18-and-under) over MP United-15U Silver, 3-1 in the 2011 FA Challenge Cup finals at the Oleai soccer field on Saturday.
Wang handed MPU-18U a 1-0 lead and delivered a second-half goal with 30-minutes remaining.
Minutes after halftime, MPU-15U’s Jehn Joyner nearly evened the game but missed the net by a few feet. His teammate Andrew Johnson also had his chance but missed a kick near the goal.
Wang then assisted Moon Bin Hong for their third point.
“They were excellent. They played against the toughest team in the league,” said MPU-18U’s coach Brad Ruszala after the match.
“We did a scrimmage against them in the beginning of the season and we actually lost.”
Most of MPU-15U’s strikers aren’t new to the sport. Players including Enrico Del Rosario, Angelo Jones, and Joyner — among others — represented the CNMI’s 15U National Team to the 2011 East Asian Football Federation Youth Tournament last July.
Del Rosario scored MPU-15U’s lone goal late in the second half this weekend.
“We were lacking a bit of teamwork before but we improved. We had a lot of one-two passes and Yishan (Wang) was really, really great. He had the most stamina and speed on the field,” mentioned MPU-18U’s team captain Seoung Joon Lee.
“MPU-15U is a hard team to beat because their teamwork is so good even at a young age,” he added.
MPU-18U was also comprised of Nam Ki Kim, Dae Min Jeon, Byong Ha (Greg) Kim, Ji Hyun Kim, Stacy Macaranas, So Hyuk (Chris) Park, Jin Han (Paul) Yoon, Ye Jun (Jacob) Choi, Bruce Li, Clay McCullough-Stearns, Jeong Hwang Kim, Taek Han (Diego) Yoon, Feng Xuan Liu, Christopher Camacho, and Yong Jun (Frank) Jeon.
Both MPU teams clinched their age division titles this season. Shirley’s Football Club-15U claimed the Youth League’s girls title.
