Guam approves power rate decrease

The Consolidated Commission on Utilities on Monday night approved a request from the Guam Power Authority to reduce the fuel surcharge by 1.9 percent.

The request to decrease the Levelized Energy Adjustment Clause, or LEAC, was made as a result of oil prices decreasing, according to GPA spokesperson Art Perez. However, Perez also said fuel prices have not been stable over the past several months.

The 1.9 percent reduction in the LEAC portion of ratepayers’ bills will translate to a decrease of $5.08 based on a 1,000 kilowatt per hour usage per month, GPA announced.

“We are happy to make this announcement to our customers,” stated GPA General Manager Joaquin Flores. “GPA will continue to look and evaluate any opportunity to reduce our operating costs so that any savings can be passed on to our customers.”

The next step for GPA will be to petition the Public Utilities Commission. If PUC approves GPA’s request, the rate adjustment will take effect on Feb. 1, 2012.
