Calvo will succeed Daniel H. Nielsen whose term will expire on Jan. 9, 2013.
Calvo is the husband of former treasurer Antoinette M. Calvo who was suspended last July as the Department of Finance announced that it was “reshaping to fit very limited” financial resources.
Charles Calvo will join Eric Plinske on the commission.
Sen. Frank Q. Cruz, R-Tinian, said Plinske is the only CSC nominee confirmed by the Senate so far.
Cruz said he does not remember the governor firing anybody from the commission so he believes that Nielsen has resigned.
Cruz, who chairs the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigation, said he has no problem with the governor’s appointees as long as they meet the requirements.
But he wonders why the governor has not appointed anyone from Rota and Tinian to the Civil Service Commission.
He said his committee may not be able to act on Calvo’s appointment right away because the Senate is busy with the fiscal year 2012 budget bill.
“We don’t want to have another shutdown,” Cruz said adding that as soon as the budget is passed his committee will immediately look at Calvo’s nomination.
