“I still have to receive a full report of the incident,” Department of Public Safety Commissioner Ramon C. Mafnas told Variety yesterday afternoon.
Once the investigation report is in, Mafnas said, “We will inform the public.”
In a statement, Mafnas said, “The tragic vehicular accident in Rota is under investigation. A report will be submitted to the CNMI DPS commissioner upon completion of the investigation.”
“I am in contact with Rota DPS Resident Director Manuel Atalig in which the director reported that four persons were involved in the vehicular accident with one fatality. We will release more information soon,” he added.
This reporter repeatedly called DPS Rota, but was told Atalig was either in a meeting or outside his office.
Variety learned that the fatality graduated from Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Junior/Senior High School last school year.
One of the victims was still at the Rota Health Center, while the remaining two were released after treatment, Variety was told.
The fatality recently enlisted in the Army.
The fatality was about to leave for Guam en route to his training in Texas.
The pick-up truck slammed into a telephone pole, throwing off the fatality and the person now in critical condition from the truck’s bed.
A witness saw the wreckage, a silver pick-up. Its bed was ripped off, Variety was told.
