Shi, Saipan shine in goodwill tourney

Shi started dominating in the team event, where Saipan went undefeated against teams Guam A and B and Tinian.

The hosting team was composed of Marianas Amateur Table Tennis Association president Steven Lim, Budhi Gurung, Shi and her son David Yang, and Todd Montgomery.

Saipan defeated Guam A in a best of seven series as Gurung bested Red Ordonez, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4. Shi defeated Hiromitsu Hamamoto (11-4, 11-4, 11-7) while Lim conquered Pablo Rodriguez (6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7).

Saipan then swept Tinian, winning their seventh game between Gurung and Shi and the pair of Luke and Robin Lu (9-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-8). Guam B fell next after losing four of six games to the hosting team.

Team Tinian settled for second place with two wins throughout the round robin event. Guam A ranked third with one win and two losses.

Shi clinched the doubles title with Gurung after defeating Hamamoto and John Matias, 11-6, 17-15, and 11-9 in the finals round.

The doubles champs eliminated Guam’s Edwin Cadag and Ordonez (11-3, 11-8, 11-3) in the semifinals. Hamamoto and Matias rallied past Luke and Charlie Lu, winning three of five games to reach the championship.

Shi later went undefeated and won four straight matches to top a 16-player pool in the single-elimination singles event.

Luke Lu took another disappointing loss after bowing to Shi (11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-2) in the finals round. The Tinian-based player won only one of their four sets and took out Gurung and Lim before facing the champion.

Shi crushed Liang Wei Bin (8-11, 11-2, 11-9, 11-5) in the quarterfinals and eliminated Charlie Cheng in a five set match during the semis.

Guam was represented by seven players, with returning player Edwin Cadag joined by Tony Huang, Hamamoto, Rodriguez, Eddie Huang, Ordonez, and Matias.

Tinian’s four-man roster included: Liang Wei Bin, Luke and Robin Lu, and Cheng.

Team Saipan has not consecutively won all titles in five years.
