Grillin’s lead scorer Lerio Pagarao couldn’t find his way to the basket during the fourth quarter, missing seven baskets to handy defensive work from GPPC’s Jerry Tolentino and Randy Mungcal.
GPPC Inc. surged on a 12-point shooting spree from Mungcal to claim the game, 80-72.
Team Grillin’ still had a fighting chance in the closing eight minutes, tying the game 50-50. Several close calls drew GPPC closer in the scoreboard, including a two-point gap four minutes into the third quarter.
A series of fouls forced Mungcal on the free throw line, allowing him four of eight attempts. He had earlier fired a layup past Ritual and assisted Alex Ocampo on an open basket to keep Grillin’ at bay.
Pagarao, who went scoreless during the first quarter, mustered seven of his 17 points from the second period and added four more 10 minutes later. Teammate Leo Galarse arrived by the second half, scoring 10 points with a steal from Boboy Sampang.
GPPC fell behind 59-60 with five minutes left on the clock but quickly gained control after a fadeaway shot from Mungcal.
Ocampo constantly shut Pagarao down from the basket since Grillin’s 10-19 lead in the first quarter and sealed the match with seven extra points.
Boboy Sampang, Moises Tagle, and Jerry Tolentino aided GPPC’s final rally with a combined 11 points.
Ocampo earned a game high 29 points with 15 rebounds while Mungcal scored 17 with eight rebounds and four assists.
Next to Pagarao, Lerio bagged 17 points and Roger Herrera tallied 17.
