Rollers prep for Guam tourney

This will be the Rollers’ second “Take Care” event since competing last year.

The group will be joined by players from the 10-and-under division according to head coach Joe Diaz. Seven 10U players will travel to Guam, along with those from the 12U-A, 12U-B, 14U-A, 14U-B, 16-18 coed, and 18U divisions. 18U participants will also play in the 25U division.

Plans for the tournament are still being developed, with Diaz recruiting players from other clubs and villages.

“Right now, I’m just working with some clubs who may want to go to Guam. We’ve already chosen kids for the 10U group,” he said.

“I’m pretty much confident that they’ll do great. Some players from last year are returning with us this year.”

Young athletes CJ Morales and Kyle Rios will make their second trip in the 12U-B division. Last year’s 12U MVP, Michael Cenir, will now compete in the 14U-B division along with John Cano and Melvin Deocares.

The Rollers will join 20 other Guam-based teams during their stay. The tournament starts November 17 and ends on the 29th. Players will leave on November 16 and return on the 30th.

“We’ve been going to Guam since 2005 and right now, their chemistry is great. They just need more work. Our toughest challenge is in the 18U division,” said Diaz.

Each player will need $225 for their airline ticket and food allowance. The club will cover their rooms and shuttle services.

To better prepare the Rollers, Diaz will hold a 10U and 12U friendly tournament tomorrow.

Requirements

In addition, all Rollers members must pass requirements to join in off-island competitions.

All off-island-bound players must be active in the RBC for more than one year.

“Being selected depends on their character. Education also comes first so our players must get at least a C+ in their grades to qualify. We also check their attendance in school and during practice,” added Diaz.

Sponsors needed

With a large delegate heading to Guam, the Rollers are on a constant search for sponsors.

Diaz thanks the RBC’s current sponsors: Docomo Pacific, Tan Siu Lin Foundation, IT&E, EFC Engineers and Architects Corporation, Division of Youth Services, and Arlene’s Dress Shop.
