Netters rally through week 2 of Shirley’s Classic

Among those undefeated are Andrew Galvez and Angie Ito, who hold five wins as of Sunday in the mixed doubles class AA division. Both crushed Mario Diola and Toshiko Obata, 21-10, 21-10 in a two set match last Sunday and triumphed over Gerry Hibi and Annarose Omori (21-19, 10-21, 21-18) on Saturday. They drew their third victory over Macoi Aguda and Marlene Peraja (21-19, 21-20) last week Wednesday.

Veteran players Ferdie Arago and Lanie Batolome trail in second place at three wins and one loss, with their most recent victory coming from Hibi and Omori (21-8, 21-16).

Gary Bondoja and Choi Hannah dominated the class A-and-below division with four wins. The pairs of Guintu and Toshiko Obata and Robert Reyes and Malou Malasarte are currently tied in second with three wins and one loss each.

Bondoja and Hannah handed Hapi Gabriel and Jaja Samonte a 21-13, 21-13 loss in their most recent match this weekend. Guintu and Obata lost their perfect record after falling to Robert Reyes and Malasarte, 21-15, 21-18.

Meanwhile, the 40-and-above division holds a three-way tie between Guintu and Oh In Sook, Diola and Choi Hannah, and Reyes and Elma Labuson. All three teams stand at three wins with no losses.

Guintu and In Sook maintained their streak over a three-set win versus Bondoja and Kim Boranah last Friday. On Sunday, Diola and Hannah needed only two sets to down Alvin Alvarez and Emily Vargas (21-16, 21-8).

Bondoja is partnered with Oh In Sook in the class BB division, where both stand with five wins. Netter and basketball player Wowie Abuel ranks second with Lanie Bartolome at four wins.

Nani and Roma Barlao ruled the class CC division with five wins, having won their last game versus Brandon Talania and Windy Fernandez (21-12, 17-21, 21-15).
