Over 500 join Facebook campaign to ‘save’ Tamat Beach

The Facebook group “Save Tamat Beach”  was created last Tuesday and continues to attract more members who are also posting statements regarding the need to preserve the tranquility and beauty of the area.

The “Save Tamat Beach” page on Facebook was created for those  who own properties in the area and for people who enjoy visiting the beach.

The Facebook page provides members of the group an avenue to air their concerns like how another high rise building in the area can add to the drainage problems and bring to the open other issues.

Many of the members said they are not against development but a “low-income housing mega-plex could turn this beautiful beach into a ghetto and kids will lose their freedom to roam around safely.”

They said they support any development that could help spur the economy, but they are also urging developers to leave the beach alone.

They noted that there are many abandoned buildings on Saipan that investors can rebuild instead of constructing new ones and abandoning them again later.

They are  asking members of the community to participate in more public hearings and maximize their opportunities to voice out their opinions by writing letters and sending emails of concern to the Legislature, the Zoning Office, Coastal Resources Management, governor’s office and “anyone who would listen to maintain the tranquility of Tamat Beach.”

Variety reported on Wednesday that 15 landowners and heirs had already written to the Zoning Office to state their concerns about the construction project.

They cited potential damage that may come to their homes when the actual construction begins, and other concerns including traffic congestion, air pollution and noise pollution.

Triple J Enterprises hopes to break ground for the $30 million Blue Water Homes project in 2012 if everything goes according to plan.
