The 20-year-old swimmer entered the men’s 50-meter butterfly event and ranked fourth in heat four — placing 48th overall — at 26.66 seconds.

He finished 2.9 seconds below ranking leader Timothy Phillips (23.76) of the United States, trailing Hong Kong’s Tung Andres (26.52) and China’s Wu Keqiang (26.6).

Russia’s Giulio Andrea Zorzi topped Wong’s heat at 24.84 seconds.

Despite not reaching the finals round, Wong has yet to take on the 100m breaststroke, 100m fly, 200m individual medley, and 50m breaststroke events.

Last Sunday, he clocked in at two minutes and 27.17 seconds in the men’s 200m breaststroke — right below Lithuanian swimmer Simas Jarasunas (2:25.54) and China’s Zhihao Wang (2:25.95).

New Zealand’s Glenn Snyders took the gold in the evening’s finals at two minutes and 10.85 seconds, followed by Lithuania’s Giedrius Titenis (2:10.85) and Japan’s Kazuki Otsuka (2:10.96).

Up next for Wong is the men’s 100 breaststroke that began yesterday at the Main Natatorium of the Universiade Sports Center.
