Connie’s Diner: A new destination in Chalan Piao

The first thing that I noticed when we came in was the space — lots of it — with the tables spread far and wide. We were still in time for the special Sunday buffet, where for $7.50 you get your fill of all-time Filipino and local favorites such as steamed or yellow rice,  kadun pika or the local version of spicy fried chicken, chicken adobo, chopsuey, meatballs, vegetable dishes, lechon or roast pork, fresh lumpia or spring roll and a wide selection of favorite deserts like custard cakes, puto or steamed rice cake, fruits and more.

Not in a “hungry mode” yet, I just loaded my plate with a slice of chicken adobo, vegetables and a couple slices of kadun pika, and desserts. My buddy who claimed he had been hungry since forever loaded his plate with a little of everything the buffet table has to offer.

Connie’s Diner owner Connie Bernardo said the menu varies every day a to give the customers something to look forward to, but the lechon and the fresh lumpia will always be there each Sunday as their signature dishes.

The buffet comes with refillable iced tea.

Bernardo said they are still working on adding more items to their menu, depending on the demands of the dining public. On regular days, you can order fastfood items like pancit bihon, lomi, spaghetti and other favorites.

Connie’s Diner is your newest destination in addition to the few establishments offering breakfast on Saipan. Check out your breakfast favorites starting at 6 a.m. where you get choices of fried rice or steamed rice or pancakes, Chamorro sausage, eggs cooked anyway you want it, bacon, tocino, longganisa, hotdog and Spam.

They also offer a variety of sandwiches from $2.50 to $4 including cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger, grilled cheese, tuna sandwich, ham and egg or ham and cheese.

Opened just last October 23, Connie’s Diner offers a spacious dining area which you can turn into a dance floor if the celebration calls for it. This also means the risk of jabbing into someone’s elbow or accidentally pouring soup on somebody’s back is a remote possibility.

The chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings and the glass windows provides a view of the road and add to the pleasant ambiance of the place, an element that a lot of diners look for in a restaurant to be comfortable.

At night, video karaoke is available for those who want to sing and a billiards table for pool enthusiasts. If you’re not into billiards or singing, you can order your favorite beer or other drinks and chat with your friends.

Bernardo said they also offer catering service for different occasions like birthdays, weddings, and more.

Connie’s Diner can accommodate about 100 persons and is open from 6 a.m. all the way to lunch until 2 p.m., and from 5 pm. to 10 p.m. for dinner.

Only cash is accepted for now. For reservations or inquiries, call 234-5298 or 898-8649/8658.{jcomments off}
