This was among the many questions fifth grade students from San Antonio Elementary School asked during their visit Thursday at the Marianas Variety office in Garapan.
The fieldtrip of the 60 students was part of their benchmark on language and arts.
Clare Cruz, one of the teachers who accompanied the students, said they chose Variety to know “how the newspaper works.”
“We want to teach the students about writing news reports,” she said.
Teachers Nolyn Villagomez, Corin Rengiil and Marylou Dejillies also joined the students.
Rengiil said the students will be asked to write something about what they learned during their visit at the Variety.
She said each class will come up with a newsletter that features the students’ reports.
Marianas Variety president Laila Y. Boyer welcomed the visitors and talked about the NMI’s oldest and only independent newspaper.
She discussed with students the Variety’s operations, including how the news is written and submitted by the reporters and how the editor “puts the paper to bed.”
Boyer showed the students the Variety’s newsroom as well as the art and production departments.
At the art department, computer layout artist Loida Martinez Ocampo showed the students how the pages are created and designed.
Sales department head Jeanette Sarabia, for her part, discussed how the newspaper solicits advertisements.
Students Mareko Tekopau and Christian Ruiz said they enjoyed the visit.
“I also learned about using recycled paper,” said Ruiz who expressed interest in becoming a reporter.
