Joyner, pair of bowlers named July Athletes of the Month

Joyner was recognized as the Male Student Athlete of the Month after scoring the commonwealth’s first ever U-14/U-15 international competition goal against Macau in the 2011 East Asian Football Federation U-15 Youth Tournament in Taipei City, Taiwan.

The CNMI won that game, 2-1, its first win in international play, in large part due to Joyner’s contributions to his team.

During the NMASA monthly meeting, Northern Mariana Islands Football Association general secretary and CNMI U-15 Boys National Team general manager Edward Salas said Joyner and his team made the CNMI proud.

“[Joyner] scored the NMI’s first ever international goal in that tournament. The team did better than expected. I would have nominated the whole team if I could,” he told the NMASA members.

The Saipan Bowling Association nominated Paul Pangelinan and Gloria Omechelang for Male and Female Athletes of the Month.

Pangelinan was crowned the 2011 PBA Budweiser Bowler of the Year in the stepladder finals on July 10, when he topped the nine-game elimination roll-off, in which he carded 1,768 pin falls in the elimination round for an average of 198.44.

Omechelang was named the 2011 Budweiser July Queen of the Lanes. She fell a total of 676 pins in her four-game series, knocking down 196 pins in Game 1, 154 in Game 2, 142 in Game 3, and 184 in the final game for an average of 169 pin falls.
