Rodriguez has introduced Bill 381, which will mandate that the vehicles procured for the government meet certain fuel efficiency standards.
“Many cars procured by government agencies are gas-guzzling vehicles that cause unnecessary pollution and negatively impact our island’s environment,” the bill states. “The less gas that a car uses, the less pollution the car creates.”
Rodriguez also said the climbing fuel prices and the need to purchase gas for inefficient government-owned vehicles is a “needless burden” to the government.
The bill will revise the government’s procurement policy for purchasing motor vehicles, with the exception of vehicles used for law enforcement, emergency response, and utilitarian use.
If enacted into law, government cars will be required to meet vehicle standards in descending order of reduced fuel consumption vehicles; petroleum-hybrid vehicles; or a vehicle that meets the standards of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
