Both men, whose names were not available, were “in reasonable condition,” after a medical check by a health aide on Namdrik, an atoll with a population of about 600 people that is about 300 miles north of Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati.
The two men are 53 and 26 years of age and were reported lost at sea in Kiribati on October 22, according Marshall Islands Sea Patrol advisor Lt. Cmdr. George McKenzie.
“The boat had been reported missing and at the time a three-day air and sea search was undertaken, controlled by U.S. Coast Guard in Honolulu” in coordination with officials in Kiribati, he said.
The men told people on Namdrik that a week before they landed, they were feeling weak and sick from lack of food, McKenzie said.
They washed into shore Thursday at first light about 6am. They had drifted for 33 days.
Arrangements were in progress to get the men transferred to Majuro and then returned to Kiribati.
