Ex-cop to be sentenced after conclusion of insurance scam case

Tagabuel was to stand trial on Monday but signed a plea agreement, admitting the charge of conspiracy to commit theft, and his latest charges of assault and battery, and criminal mischief.

Tagabuel’s co-defendants were also to stand trial this month, but one of the defense attorneys will not be available until December.

Judge Kenneth L. Govendo will sentence Tagabuel between  zero and six months for conspiracy to commit theft, and a maximum of one year for assault and battery, and criminal mischief.

Both sentences will run consecutively, according to the plea agreement.

Tagabuel is currently out on bail.

Variety was told that Assistant Attorney General Shelli Neal will file an amended plea agreement that will order Tagabuel to cooperate in the prosecution of his two co-defendants in the insurance scam case.

Stephen Woodruff is serving as Tagabuel’s court-appointed defense counsel.

According to the factual basis of the plea agreement, Tagabuel conspired with Yu Jai Feng “Lili” Cepeda and Serafin Amog Esperancilla in a scheme of presenting false insurance claims that included fake police reports, claiming fake car crashes amounting to over $250 but less than $20,000, from Oct. 29, 2007 through Jan. 2008.

In the latest case, Tagabuel admitted slapping his partner, ripping the victim’s screen door, and disturbing the peace of the victim and her parents on July 17, 2011.
