Tinian lawmakers OK $35K for roads; $41K for patients, school

Delegation chairman and Senate Vice President Jude U. Hofschneider, Floor Leader Rep. Trenton B. Conner, Sens. Frank Q. Cruz and Henry H. San Nicolas voted to approve House Local Bills 17-46 and 17-59.

Introduced by Conner, R-Tinian, H.L.B 17-46 appropriates $35,000 in Tinian developer infrastructure tax for the repair of unpaved and frequently used roads in Marpo Heights, Marpo Heights 2 and Carolinas.

The funds go to the Department of Public Works on Tinian but the expenditure authority is the Tinian mayor’s office.

H.L.B. 17-59, which was authored also by Conner, appropriates $41,813 in pachinko and poker fees for ailing Tinian residents and Tinian Elementary School.

$27,000 will go to patients undergoing dialysis, as well as those with cancer, multiple sclerosis, debilitating epilepsy seizure, dermatomyositis and post-cerebral vascular accidents, while $14,813 will be used to pay the costs incurred in the Chamorro language competition held recently by Tinian students on Guam.

The delegation amended H.L.B. 17-59 to require the Tinian Health Center to provide the Department of Finance a list of eligible patients for the financial assistance.

Also during the session, Conner asked his colleagues to look into the decision of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s  to stop providing lunch to Tinian patients at the hospital on Saipan.

He said this may be okay to those who have their own resources, “but how about those who don’t have them?”
