Students must submit their applications of the scholarship before the given date, with the required supporting documents such as two letters of recommendation, acceptance letter, transcripts and an essay, as well as meet several criteria and eligibility requirements.
The Yap State Scholarship is a competitive, Compact-funded scholarship for the students of Yap. But of an average of 100 applications, 80 percent receive the scholarship, according to Brian Southwick, state scholarship coordinator. Many students from Yap depend on the small scholarship to continue their education on-island and abroad. It is usually a certainty that they will return, as one of the required criteria of the scholarship is the student’s expressed commitment to return Yap.
