Tinian’s Mary Hocog named student representative

“I am honored that she comes from Tinian. With her vast qualification and experience, I look forward to her active participation, involvement and representation of our students to the board,” BOE Tinian member Lucy Blanco-Maratita said yesterday.

An A-list student, Hocog, who has a grade point average of 3.81, is involved in several in-school and extracurricular activities.

“We want to congratulate you for your appointment as student representative,” BOE Chairwoman Marylou S. Ada told Hocog.

A constitutionally created education policy-making body, BOE is composed of elected members from Saipan, Tinian and Rota. But it also has non-voting seats for the representatives of students and teachers.

The appointment of Hocog is part of the “rotation approach” proposed by BOE.

She succeeds Joycelynn Violy Y. Atalig of Rota High School, who completed her term at the end of school year 2010-2011.

The last Tinian  student representative was Lovelle Borja.

“BOE plays a vital role in ensuring the best education possible for our students. [I] am confident that you will make valuable contributions, and we appreciate your willingness to serve and provide input from a students’ point of view,” Inos told Hocog in his appointment letter Monday.

On July 1, BOE Chairwoman Ada notified Gov. Benigno R. Fitial about the vacant seat for the student representative so he could appoint a new one.

Hocog  is president of Tinian’s Close Up Foundation, the operations and training officer of the JROTC, a leadership team captain, a superior cadet, an academic team member, vice president of the Chamorro Club, a student parliamentarian, a national honor society member, captain of the female Tinian High School soccer team, a national youth correspondent, a mock trial participant, a Young Writers Guild member, the assistant editor of the Stallion Times yearbook and commander of the Stallion Battalion.

She has also attended several programs of the Public School System, including the 2010 Summer Health Career Program, the 2009 JROTC Leadership Symposium/Academic Bowl, and the Annual Chamorro Language Competition.
