CRM holds public hearing for Pellegrino’s slaughterhouse proposal

One concern brought up was that of employment.

Pellegrino replied that the business will have “100 percent resident workers.”

Another was that of odors and wastes. Pellegrino described a variety of different methods to use to be rid of the wastes including burial methods. He also explained that the structure will stand at least 138 feet away from the main highway.

As of yesterday, Pellegrino had acquired all necessary permits except for that from CRMO.

The businessman says “the establishment will be open for any individual to drop off their animal for slaughtering,” saying that it will not solely be for commercial use.

The decision was made that Pellegrino should apply for a minor siting project permit, as opposed to a major siting project permit since its operations are small and will not cause a major land disturbance.

Pellegrino explains the size of operations for the business.

“For the first three to six months, we’ll probably slaughter 20 pigs a month. After a few more months, we will probably slaughter 40 to 60 pigs a month at most.”

Members of the hearing commended him in his ventures and he was even described as, “a maverick in the community with vision and desire.”
