Guam holds Chamorro dance competition

The two-day festivity is a signature event of Pa’a Taotao Tano’, a nonprofit cultural organization whose mission is to promote and perpetuate the indigenous Chamorro culture of the island.

Beginning Saturday, several cultural performing groups showcased their talents by competing in the contemporary category and the Spanish category.

Not only was the event competition-driven, but entertainment was provided by guest performers such as the Guam Chamorro Dance Academy Students from Japan, led by Master of Chamorro Dance Frank Rabon.

Crafters were also on site selling their carvings, crafts, artwork and even dolls. Chamorro food and drinks were sold as well.

The final day of the event concluded yesterday, with another competition in the Ancient category. The announcement of winners followed late afternoon.

Overall winner of $1,000 went to Rasan Acho Latte, led by Brian Terlaje. They also won $500 for Best in Contemporary category.

Winning Best in Ancient category was Irensia Taotao Tano, led by Eileen Meno, while Best in Spanish went to Katon I Tano, lead by Bobbie Tainatongo. Each won $500 as well.
