“We had the students take career interest surveys and we matched their interests with those who we chose to come present,” says school counselor Kim Concepcion. This way the students will be sure to really take interest in the presentations, she explains.
The school set up the day to have six different sessions so that every student would be able to hear from each of the six presenting groups.
The Marianas Visitor Authority, which has presented every year, had Frank Tudela share about his career. “I want to emphasize tourism and hospitality. It’s important to maintain and upkeep the tourist sites,” comments Tudela.
He presented a brief PowerPoint presentation on the importance of tourism.
“There are lots of job opportunities for the kids,” Tudela tells Variety.
“Some of them might want to venture to the tourism sector because it’s a lot of fun.” Tudela shares that he has worked for the MVA for the past 23 years.
Also in attendance were aircraft rescue firefighters.
Lt. Ray Cruz was asked to talk “about safety and what equipment and tools we use in emergencies,” he says.
He and his fellow firefighter showed students their fire truck and emergency equipment, including a thermal sensor which can be used to detect bodies in the dark.
At the nurses’ station, students had their blood pressure checked, were taught how to check for a pulse, and witnessed a blood sugar check demonstration.
With the interest surveys indicating that the students had great interest in graphic arts and t-shirts, WSR asked Theresa Worsick of the Educational Talent Search Program to discuss with the kids what needs to be done to start a business in these areas. Worsick presented photos, advertising methods, and stories of her own business, Island Rebel.
Assistant Chief Ben Guerrero and Officers Byron Kaipat and Jesse Castro of the Commonwealth Ports Authority provided students the opportunity to watch police canines search luggage for dangerous items.
Other presenters included Victorino S. Cepeda of the Northern Marianas Trades Institute and U.S. Army recruiter SSG. Castro.
