San Vicente Canaries honor retiring principal

“We have chosen a medicine tree, keeping in mind that she has been our protector,” said a Student Council officer in regards to the Pink Tacoma Tree planted during the assembly.

To Salas’s understanding, the general assembly that Friday was for the school’s last field day of the year; little did she know that the SVES Canaries had something else in mind for her.

Salas has been with SVES for more than 30 years and will be retiring at the end of this year, said Teresa Miller, a San Vicente teacher.

They wanted to “honor her years that she has served for our school and thank her,” she added.

After retirement, Salas plans to move off-island to be closer to her granddaughter. She intends to go back to teaching. Her plan is to first volunteer at schools and then hopefully become a teacher again.

“My heart is with the kids,” she told Variety.
