In a statement, Katie Tran-Lam, the fund’s director of communications & marketing, said Kevin Harvey Bautista, a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, will receive $2,500 for the 2011-2012 academic school year.
Bautista said he found apiasf.org online and applied for the scholarship.
He said he was required to write three short essays with his application.
“I wrote about how education is going to impact the community, how it feels to be an Asian Pacific Islander student, and what concerns or issues I was planning to address when I finish my education,” Bautista said.
Bautista is also one of the five recipients of the $2,000 scholarship awards of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce
He will attend the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to pursue a degree in political science.
“I’m very happy for the opportunities that I got from these scholarships. Every penny counts toward education,” Bautista said.
The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund is the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted solely to providing college scholarships for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
The scholarships range from $2,500 to $8,000 for each individual.
