Conner, R-Tinian, introduced House Local Bill 17-46 to allow Tinian’s Department of Public Works to spend $35,000 in developer infrastructure tax collections on an electrical, water, sewerage, road, drainage, flood control and solid waste system.
The Tinian Legislative Delegation however did not act on this local bill as it convened at 10 a.m. in the conference room of Senate Vice President Jude U. Hofschneider, R-Tinian, yesterday on Capital Hill.
The expenditure authority for this fund, the bill states, will be the mayor of Tinian at the request of the DPW resident director.
Conner, during the last delegation session on Thursday last week expressed concern about his constituents’ fate if the Fitial administration agreed with Mayor Ramon M. Dela Cruz’s proposal to put the Tinian Department of Public Safety and the Tinian Health Center under the central government’s budget.
Dela Cruz in his letter last week suggested to Gov. Benigno R. Fitial that the central government “adopt” Tinian-DPS and THC in order for the mayor’s office and other departments on Tinian to survive further reduction of the fiscal year 2011 budget.
Although he acknowledges the mayor’s bold move in addressing Tinian’s current financial crisis, Conner is worried about the consequences of giving the central government total control over Tinian’s DPS and THC personnel.
