Free health screening for Filipino workers

Consul General Medardo Macaraig said more volunteers participated in the quarterly event.

The Bayani group of the United Filipino Organizations assisted in the registration of Filipino workers.

“The Filipino community members helped the speedy checkup of patients because they assisted in the registration instead of the nurses who were doing it before,” Macaraig said.

The volunteers from Bayani were Flor Miranda, Anatalia De Guzman, Cristina Lifoifoi, Yolanda De Ramons, Lolita Velasco and Ronald De Ramos.

Although, the consulate general did  not process passport applications yesterday, Macaraig said they provided other consular services.

Labor representative Carmelina Velasquez, for her part, helped promote the livelihood program of the consul general.

She distributed leaflets from the Philippine Bureau of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development regarding  livelihood and business opportunities in the Philippines.

Fely Legaspi, a Commonwealth Health Center nurse who has been a volunteer for over 10 years now, said the free health screening is a good project, adding that the consul general should continue to support Filipino workers, especially those without health insurance.

Macaraig thanked the personnel from Hardt Eye Clinic and the Filipino volunteer medical team which included  PHI Pharmacy and the CHC nurses.

He said many Filipino workers started coming in before the registration at 7 a.m.

The health screening provided by volunteers yesterday includes blood pressure, blood sugar and vision check-ups.

Macaraig said the event was part of the celebrations commemorating the 113th anniversary of the Philippine Independence Day, the  150th birth anniversary of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal and the fifth Philippine Migrant Workers Day on Saipan.
