Focus on NMI woes

Sablan also learned that the CNMI House of Representatives, which is dominated by pro-administration members, is preparing a resolution opposing his bill which will give status to certain nonresidents in the CNMI.

In an interview on Friday, Sablan said he would like the governor to pay attention to the pressing issues the CNMI is facing right now.

Immigration, he added, is now a federal issue.

The Fitial administration should  fix the problems of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and find a way to save the CNMI economy, he said.

“The governor and the Legislature should pay attention to the several issues here, such as the economy, instead of pulling a shell game,” Sablan said.

He noted that the administration continues to insist on a 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone which it knows the CNMI is not going to get.

Early this year,  Sablan  introduced H.R. 670, which will convey three miles of submerged lands back to the Northern Marianas.

For the July 14 hearing, Sablan, the ranking member of the subcommittee, said he has asked the presiding officers of the CNMI Senate and House to submit their written testimony.

The governor  was also invited to testify during the hearing.

“Please governor, fix the problem here in the CNMI and leave the U.S Congress alone,” Sablan said.
