Local monitoring efforts include non-intrusive screening of travelers

The CNMI Customs, Quarantine and Department of Public Health along with federal agencies are conducting radiation checks for travelers entering the CNMI. The checks are passive in nature, meaning that the passengers themselves do not notice the monitors and that it is business as usual, walking by the inspectors or agents who are wearing the pager-like devices on them.

There is no current health risk and there is no expectation of any future risk to the CNMI from the radioactive material releases. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the CNMI have installed radiological monitoring equipment and are continuously monitoring the air and rainwater for radiological levels.
