Sun Park, son of Byung Hoon Park and Keum Ju Park of Saipan, has accepted an offer to attend the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, a stepping-stone to the Academy.
According to Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, Mafnas and Park “were two of my nominees in this year’s selection process for the U.S. service academies; and both are highly motivated, well-rounded individuals whom I believe will represent the Northern Mariana Islands well as students and as officers in the armed forces.”
Mafnas is a member of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and the National Honor Society, and competes for his school’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams and cross-country team.
In addition to his multiple academic and athletic awards, he also spends many hours volunteering for charity events and tutoring other students. Mafnas’ older brother, Ulysses Uriah Mafnas, also attended the Air Force Academy, graduating with the Class of 2003.
Sun Park is a senior at Marianas Baptist Academy. The Air Force Prep School he will attend is a 10-month program designed to prepare qualified students to enter the Academy.
Park is a student leader — class president, school newspaper liaison officer, and yearbook assistant editor.
He has also participated in National Forensic League events and plays for MBA’s volleyball and basketball teams.
Upon graduation from the Air Force Academy, Mafnas and Park will be awarded bachelor of science degrees and commissioned as second lieutenants in the Air Force.
They will then serve on active duty for a minimum of five years.
