Serenity Babauta Magofna’s mother, Satomi Magofna.
SPENDING time with my mom is one of the best ways to create memories. But the best memories are when she does story time with me and my siblings. One of our favorite stories would be how she came to name our brother Tasi.
As a little girl she mentioned how she and her parents would always go to the beach during the weekends, holidays, and summer break. She was fond of the ocean as a little kid. She enjoyed swimming, making sand castles, catching the tiny little crabs by the shore. Or simply just making sand angels in the sand. She would tell us stories how she would sometimes wake up early to follow her mom and dad to the beach just to sit and watch her dad talaya with his net. She would sit and watch her dad walk the shore throwing out his net and right beside him would be is bucket where he would put all the tiao and e’e he caught.
Being one of the youngest she said she would babysit her siblings kids and of the best things she enjoyed doing was bringing them down to the beach.
As she grew older she grew a special connection to the ocean. She told us it was one of the places she would go to when she was having a bad day. She would walk down to the beach and just sit there and listen to the waves she said it’s hard to describe how the ocean would just take all her problems away.
When she found out she was pregnant with my brother she said it was her special place. She would walk down to just to get away from everything and feel at peace. She said she could tell if the ocean was happy just by the currents moved in the water. These are some of the stories to how my brother got his name.
What makes me enjoy this story is that I hope to experience the connection one day my mom felt with the ocean and its breeze.
