Kites still available for Marianas winds festival

Brilliant Star principal Richard Sikkel told the Variety that the kites  came from China and the largest measures five meters in length.

He said this is the fourth time for the school to host the Marianas Winds Kite Festival and Cultural Food Fair. Sikkel said  the event, which is co-sponsored by the Marianas Visitors Authority will start from 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Sikkel said the annual kite festival is one of the biggest fundraisers of the school.

“The funds that we will raise this year will be used to strengthen our elementary class reading comprehension program,” Sikkel said.

The kite festival is organized not only to raise funds for the long-term development of the school, but also as a community project to bring families together and attract local as well as tourist participation, he added.

Kites will still be available for sale during the event on Sunday. Admission to the event is free but contestants for the kite festival will have to pay an entry fee of $5.

Sikkel said attractive prizes are at stake for winners in the different  categories.

“We will be giving prizes for the highest flying kite, smallest kite, biggest kite, and most eye catching kite,” he said.

Individuals who want to join the kite contest can also design and bring their own kites.

“Contestants can use commercial kites that they embellish or enter homemade kites, and they can do pretty much whatever they want with their kites as long as it can fly at a minimum of 10 feet and minimum time of five minutes,” Sikkel said.

Use of fishing line is not allowed but extra kite strings will be available for sale at the event.

Sikkel said there will also be games, arts and crafts and various cultural dishes prepared by the school community for sale.

“Kite festivals are globally popular family fun oriented events and we are inviting the general public to join us in this event,” he added.
