The group, a part of Eagle Scout Troop 913, along with Scout Master Valrick Welch, has been cleaning up the site since Saturday.
Scout Don Cabrera, a student at Saipan Southern High School, is the main coordinator of the cleanup.
He said every scout is given a choice of community service projects by local BSA director Calistro Reyes.
Cabrera said the cleanup of the pillbox is one section of the project he has chosen to tackle.
“My project includes the cleanup of all the historic sites along the beach side,” Cabrera told Variety.
“So I strategized and divided the project into sections and started at the first historic landmark, the Agingan Blockhouse,” he added.
He said he is putting in a lot of hard work to earn his Eagle rank.
Cabrera is working with the Division of Environmental Quality and the Historic Prehistoric Preservation Office to assure that the project is run smoothly.
“Anyone is invited to help with the revitalization of the site. Students who are seeking community service hours are more than welcome to join, as well,” Cabrera said.
“The project, however, does not benefit any organization, business, or agencies in any way. This is more for the benefit of keeping our landmarks clean, safe, and accessible for the local people and visitors from abroad who’d want to see what the island has to offer.”
