Local Medicaid reinforces commitment to health and wellness amid federal budget changes

(CMA) — The Commonwealth Medicaid Agency acknowledges the proposed $674 million reduction in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Program Management budget for fiscal year 2026.These proposed adjustments aim to streamline administrative expenditures and do not directly affect Medicaid beneficiary benefits.

George Cruz, director of the Commonwealth Medicaid Agency, stated, “Our mission remains steadfast:  to ensure that every Medicaid beneficiary of the Commonwealth has access to quality healthcare services. While administrative budgets may fluctuate, our dedication to our beneficiaries does not waver.”

The CMA said it is proactively embracing this moment as an opportunity to reinforce its commitment to program integrity and financial sustainability. Efforts are underway to enhance transparency, optimize efficiency, and ensure that every federal dollar is utilized effectively to benefit the community. To achieve this, CMA is transitioning from manual processes to new technologies to enhance efficiency, accountability and overall quality customer service to all those the CMA serves.

“We are leveraging this period to innovate and strengthen our systems,” Cruz said. “By focusing on preventive care — such as health screenings, substance use cessation, mental health care, nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle changes, just to mention a few — we aim to improve health outcomes and reduce long-term costs. This proactive approach not only aligns with CMS’s emphasis on preventive health services but also reflects our dedication to fostering a healthier, more resilient community.”

The CMA’s initiatives are also in harmony with the Department of Health and Human Services’ vision, particularly the objectives of the President’s Make America Healthy Again Commission established under Executive Order 14212. The MAHA initiative, supported by a proposed $500 million investment, seeks to address critical health challenges by promoting nutrition, physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and reducing overreliance on medication and treatments.

With strategic planning and steadfast commitment, CMA said it is confident it can continue to adapt and thrive, ensuring that the Commonwealth’s Medicaid program remains robust and responsive to the needs of all residents.
